Kitty, do you have comic recs for Secret Warrios? Because I’m interested.WHY, I AM SO GLAD THAT YOU ASKED.
Secret Warriors is a series that I’ve hesitated to add to my “ways to get into Marvel” post, because it requires a grasp on the Marvel U’s history if you want to get the full impact. I love the characters a LOT, though, and I think that you can still follow the story, even if you haven’t been cozied up to Nick’s bearskin rug of a chest since his Steranko days.
You can do one of two things. You can start with Secret Warriors itself (28 issues, self-contained) and wiki what you might not get, or you can read the two series that give you a better idea of who Alex and Daisy are (Nick Fury’s Secret War and Ares), though both of the series have been tweaked/retconned in small ways. I really enjoyed the Ares mini—-which could have easily been called GOD OF WAR: THE SINGLE DAD SAGA, since it was mostly about that. There’s some weird retcons going on there, especially when it comes to Alex’s appearance. But! It’s a lot of “hey, would you like some superheroes and Greek/Japanese mythology with your single god!dad narrative, ‘cause we have tons of that”. It’s only five issues, so if you’re interested in Alex’s history, that’s where to start.
Nick Fury’s Secret War, on the other hand, is pretty dense and plotty, and if you’re not familiar with Marvel U politics, it might go over your head. For the purposes of Secret Warriors, what you should take away from it is that it’s Daisy’s first appearance, and she is not someone you want to mess with. Unless you want your internal organs exploded and your city destroyed.
The Secret Warriors haven’t had too many appearances, mostly because they are the black ops babies that nobody gets to know about. I mean, Daisy has only had 98 comic appearances, period. They were present during Secret Invasion, Dark Reign, and Siege, but mostly in the background. I would STRONGLY suggest picking up the Secret Warriors: Siege oneshot, because it illustrates exactly how few fucks Alex gives. Summary: an eleven year old demigod with a sword storms the White House, just to prove a point. Nick Fury’s babies, everyone.
In conclusion, I love the Caterpillars, and everyone else should, too.
Reblogging this because EVERYONE SHOULD READ SECRET WARRIORS GODDAMN.
And also GOD OF WAR: THE SINGLE DAD SAGA
This sums up SW rather nicely~ And oh my gawd, the single dad saga is worth reading all in of itself. It never ceases to...
